第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分 40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.
AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19, Oct.) cost £ 169.15 at Booking. Com. A week later, the same room cost £ 118.15.
If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid ─ or you’re looking for a big event to pass your time ─ check out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.
STAY AWAY FROM THE STATION If travelling to your destination by train, you may want to find a base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.
Don’t be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge’s Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was £ 95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £ 75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £ 62.95.
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As an alternative consider checking into a self-catering flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city centre buildings. A great example is the historic O’Neill Flat on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, available for £ 420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.
GET ON A BIKE London’s ‘Boris bikes’ have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programmes that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.
Among the smaller cities with their own programmes are Newcastle (casual members pay around £ 1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £ 5 per day).
46. The Brighton Comedy Festival is mentioned mainly to show big events
may _________.
A. help travellers pass time B. attract lots of travellers to the UK

47. “Farrington” in paragraph 5 is most probably ________.
A. a hotel away from the train station B. the tube line to Covent Garden
C. an ideal holiday destination D. the name of a travel agency
48. The passage shows that the O’Neill Flat ________.
A. lies on the ground floor B. is located in central London
C. provides cooking facilities for tourists D. costs over £ 100 on average per day in late September
49. Cardiff’s programme allows a free bike for a maximum period of _______.
A. half an hour B. one hour C. one hour and a half D. two hours

David and I met as interns(实习生) on Capital Hill. Our love then grew through a 5-year long-distance relationship. We were able to survive despite our pursuit to become a doctor and a lawyer. He was at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and I was at the University of Maryland School of Law. We encouraged each other. David proposed to me on May 15, 2011 in front of both of our families. It was amazing! I graduated from law school on that day David proposed and we got married the day after he graduated from medical school.
David and I really didn’t have much money to have a huge wedding, but we wanted the wedding of our dreams. We decided to plan everything ourselves. For decoration, I tried to create as many ideas as I could. We had a signature drink called “The Huxtable”. We used mostly orchids as our flowers. We made our own seating chart (座位图) by downloading a free template(模板)and printing it out on a huge foam board. We could not afford a backdrop (背景幕) to go behind the bridal party, so we made one out of tissue and two enormous peg boards. It was awesome. Many people wanted to buy our backdrop, but I gave it to our linen designer because he gave us crazy discounts.
David designed our guestbook by using the Apple iphone photobook application. It was awesome. He came up with the title “Witness to love: David and Susan’s Wedding Day” for the cover and then on the inside he stated this, in part, “Bearing Witness: Thank you for being a witness to our covenant (盟约) with God as we commit ourselves to join as one…” I was moved deeply by his beautiful words.
We make our ceremony programs. We had a couple of gifts for guests. We gave them a handkerchief with our initials at the church, candy from the self-made candy bar display and stainless steel measuring spoons that said “love beyond measure”.
We had a great wedding and the guests enjoyed themselves. By sharing my wedding story, I just want to tell you that you can have a wedding that you want within budget.
50. Why did the writer and David decide to plan everything themselves?
A. Because they had no time to find helpers.
B. Because they wanted to save money in this way.
C. Because they thought they were able to do that.
D. Because they wanted to make sure everything was perfect.
51. People’s reaction to the backdrop made by the writer and her bridegroom shows
that _________.
A. they thought highly of it B. they wanted to sell it for money
C. they wanted to help the writer out D. they were planning for their own weddings
52. How does the writer most probably feel after seeing the words on the guestbook?
A. Down B. Curious C. Nervous D. Touched
53. The underlined word in the fourth paragraph most probably means______.
A. something very important B. some loving words they promise each other
C. the beginning capital letters of their names D. some witnesses’ words
C
I prefer Lynne Truss’s phraseology (措辞): I am a grammar “sticker”. And, like Truss ― author of Eats, Shoots & Leaves ― I have a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid.
Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have “zero tolerance”. She thinks that people who mix up basic grammar “deserve to be stuck by lightning, hacked (砍) up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave”, while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job ― even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.
Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit and Dozuki, takes a compulsory grammar test. If job hopefuls can’t distinguish between “to” and “too”, their applications go into the bin.
Of course, we write for a living. iFixit is the world’s largest online repair manual (说明书), and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So it makes sense that we’ve made a strong strike against grammar errors.
But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the Internet. And for better or worse, people judge you if you can’t tell the difference between “their” “there” and “they’re”.
Good grammar makes good business sense ― and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Writing isn’t in the official job description of most people in our office. Still, we give our grammar test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operations staff, and our programmers.
Grammar signifies more than just a person’s ability to remember high school English. I’ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing ― like stocking shelves or labeling parts. It is the same with programmers. Applicants who don’t think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also aren’t important.
54. The author agrees with Lynne Truss in that__________.
A. grammar mistakes can’t be tolerated B. books on grammar makes people stupid
C. people need to learn basic grammar D. grammar mistakes are absolutely unavoidable
55. What’s the author’s “zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar?
A. They should be left out for a job B. They have to correct their mistakes
55. What’s the author’s “zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar?
A. They should be left out for a job B. They have to correct their mistakes
C. They aren’t qualified for their job D. They must be severely punished
56. Which of the following is TRUE of iFixit and Dozuki?
A. Only one of them has a compulsory grammar test. B. They are companies where one learns grammar.
C. Grammar is quite important for their existence. D. They depend on grammar for a living.
57. What can we learn from the text?
A. Companies giving grammar tests may have no good business sense.
B. Grammar becomes unimportant as language is constantly changing.
C. A “zero tolerance” approach to grammar errors might seem a little unfair.
D. People who pay attention to writing may pay attention to other things.
Picture a wasteland of computer monitors and TVs, stretching as far as the eye can see. Imagine towers of boxes, all of them filled with broken glass and old electronic devices. Technology graveyards like this can be found in communities across the country.
Experts say that landfills and warehouses will overflow unless a plan for the disposal(清理)and reuse of electronics is put into place. “We can’t put electronics and glass aside and tell ourselves we’ll deal with them later,” Lauren Roman, managing director of Transparent Planet said. Roman’s group works to improve the disposal of electronic waste. She says about 660 million pounds of tech trash is produced each year in the US.
What’s behind the tech trash pile-up? About ten years ago, major advances were made in computer and television technology. Manufacturers began producing devices like flat-paneled LCDs and plasma(等离子)screen monitors. These new products provide a clearer image and take up less space than older models. It goes without saying that consumers choose them rather than heavy, glass-based technologies.
The new electronics are built with materials that are difficult to recycle. In addition, the new products have decreased the demand for recycled parts from the older monitors and screens. Older, heavier computer monitors and TVs used glass-based components called CRTs.
CRTs have a high lead (铅) content and can be environmentally risky if not recycled properly. If crushed and put in landfills, the lead from CRTs could seep into groundwater and rivers, harming the water supply. For many years, plants and recycling programs safely processed CRTs. The recycled CRTs were reused in the construction of new monitors.
Monitors being made today do not use glass tubes. “People are returning old-style TVs with CRTs, but no new ones are being made,” said Linnel. This is creating an imbalance in the amount of glass being disposed of and recycled properly. Many recycling companies have shut down. Others no longer have the resources or space to process these materials. This results in stockpiling.
However, experts say there are ways to safely and responsibly deal with the tech trash problem.
58. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. New technologies cause trouble for recyclers.
B. Experts are trying to solve the tech trash problem.
C. New technology has both advantages and disadvantages
D. CRTs from old computer monitors harm the earth.
59. What Lauren Roman says in paragraph 2 shows that _______.
A. people attach great importance to electronic waste
B. he has found a way on how to dispose electronic waste
C. figuring out how to deal with electronic waste is urgent
D. more landfills are needed for storing electronics and glass
60. What would the writer probably talk about next?
A. Some other problems related to technologies.
B. Some experts’ opinions on the tech-trash problems.
C. Some reasons why the tech-trash problem is hard to solve.
D. Some practical ways to solve the tech-trash problem.

You can choose how you feel regardless of what the weather is like. Remember, the weather is just the weather.
