Six years ago, I walked into a local animal shelter on a cold, rainy day. Although my house was already full of cats and dogs, I still couldn’t resist an occasional visit to the shelter. This time as I was walking down the row of pens(畜栏) full of barking dogs I noticed a small boy looking into one of them.
He had a malnourished looking body and a bony face with a big nose sticking out of the middle of it. He was looking at a small, golden dog. Its bony ribs were showing and its thin tail was folded between its legs. It wasn’t begging for attention like the other puppies but was hiding in the corner instead. The boy looked up at me with sad eyes and asked what was wrong with it. “It was probably abused and abandoned”, I said. “That is why it is so scared.”
The boy immediately turned to an older lady and said, “Grandma, I want this one.” The old woman smiled and walked to the front desk to fill out the adoption forms. I followed and asked about the boy. I found out that he’d had a rough start in life too. She had just gotten custody(监护权) of him after the state had taken him from his parents. She had hoped getting a dog would make it easier on him. I looked back at him, holding his scared puppy, and said a prayer for them both.
It was yesterday. I was driving down the road enjoying a gloriously sunny, spring day. Then in a green front yard I saw the boy. His teenage body was tall and strong. His nose no longer seemed big but fit well into his smiling face. He was throwing a ball to a healthy, happy dog with shining golden hair. His little act of love and kindness had indeed gone a long way. It had saved a dog’s life, healed his own heart, and given this middle-aged man fresh hope for us all.

Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.
Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else‘s world from the inside, stepping_into_his_or_her_shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way. The energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneselves for mutual growth.
Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don‘t want to hear.
It wasn‘t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic(有疗效的). In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of the psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient‘s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.
31. The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. preparing a topic list first B. focusing on one‘s own mind
C. directing the talk to the desired results D. experiencing the speaker‘s inside world
32.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2 ?
A. Benefits of listening. B. What to listen to.
C. How to listen well. D. Problems in listening.

C. set aside their prejudices D. open up their inner mind
34.According to the author, the patients improved mainly because ________.
A. they were taken good care of B. they knew they were truly listened to
C. they had partners to talk to D. they knew the roots of problems
35.What type of writing is the article likely to be?
A. Medical science. B. A news report. C. A medical report. D. Science fiction.

Students who date in middle school have significantly worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.
'Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence ,but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships,' said Pamela Orpinas ,study author and professor in the College of Public Health and head of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior.
Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade.
Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students* academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.
'At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,‘1 according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.
'Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker,' Orpinas said, 'when the couple break up. they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and divert attention from studying.”
“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school,”Orpinas concluded.

A. have poorer academic performances B. be more likely to hurl others
C. enjoy better school lives D. are less likely to use alcohol and tobacco
37.When doing his study, Orpinas_____.
A. followed a group of students of 6th and 12th grade
B. completed a survey and a report each year
C. completed questionnaires about the students’ academic efforts
D. found that the students’ study skills have connection with their frequency of dating
38. Study skills may include the following behaviors and qualities Except_____
A. being diligent B. being well organized
C. being kind and helpful D. finishing assigned schoolwork
39. What can possibly happen to the school couples after they break up?
A. They don’t want to see each other any longer.
B. Their attention to studying will be affected.
C. They will miss their ex-partners sometimes
D. They will think it,s reasonable Io get depressed.
40. Orpinas’ tone towards dating in middle school is_____
A. supportive B. positive C. negative D. neutral

With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it‘s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone‘s face when you know they are feeling down in the dumps (处于沮丧中), as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.
How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-workers, neighbors, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don‘t know the person I‘m joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌)to speak to others that are around you.
I know of a few people that don‘t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don‘t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?
Laughing is essential to keeping your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.
41. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that ____________.
A. it makes people more confident B. it can pick up people’ s spirits
C. it can help get rid of the cruelty in the world D. it can help people get on well with others
42. The author answers the question in the second paragraph with ___________.
A. facts and descriptions B. evidence and argument
C. examples and conclusion D. stories and persuasion
43. The phrase 'busting a gut' in the third paragraph can be replaced by __________.
A. explaining carefully B. speaking loud C. keeping silent D. laughing hard
44. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to __________.
A .talk about his own understanding of humor
B. encourage people to be humorous in daily life
C. introduce a practical way to get through daily life
D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life
45.What is the author‘ s attitude towards the present world?
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Satisfied. D. Indifferent.
