This is a true story that happened in Japan. In order to renorate the house, a Japanese tore open the walls. Japanese houses normally have a hollow space between the wooden walls. When tearing down the walls, he found that there was a lizard(蜥蜴) stuck there because a nail from outside was hammered into one of its feet. He saw this, feeling pity and curious. When he checked the nail, he found it was nailed 10 years ago when the house was first built.
What happened? The lizard had survived in such a position for 10 years! It has been in a dark wall partition(夹层) for 10 years without moving! Then he wondered how this lizard survived for 10 years without moving a single step-since its foot was nailed! So he stopped his work and observed the lizard: What has it been doing? What and how has it been eating? Later, he didn‘t know from where another lizard appeared, with food in its mouth. Ah! He was astonished and touched deeply. The free lizard had been feeding the stuck one for the past 10 years.
Such love, a beautiful love! Such love happened with this tiny creature. What can love do? It can do wonders! Just think about it: one lizard had been feeding the other one untiringly for 10 long years, without giving up hope on its partner. If a small creature like a lizard can love like this, just imagine how we can love if we try.

Drssing for winter

Layers keep you warm
It’s a good idea to layer your clothing by, for example, wearing a T-shirt and a sweater underneath a jacket. If you become too hot, it’s always easier to remove a piece of clothing than to add another. On the West Coast, prepare to dress for cool rainy or snowy weather. You will need:

“Drink your milk. It is good for you!” You’ve probably heard that many times, and it is true. Milk contains calcium, which is a necessary nutrient for keeping bones and teeth healthy and strong. The US government even requires milk as part of the National School Lunch Program, saying that students should drink one cup of fat-free milk at each meal.
Last Thursday, however, a group of doctors asked the government to remove the lunch program. The Physical Committee for Responsible Medicine says, “Milk is high in sugar, high in fat and high in animal protein,” all of which have negative effects on health. The PCRM says there were better and healthier ways to get calcium such as eating beans, broccoli, cereals and tofu. Orange juice and soymilk that have calcium added to them also supply the nutrient. “One of the only reasons people talk about dairy, or promote it at all, is because it is going to help build strong bones.” says Dr. Neal Bamard, president of the PCRM. But milk may not be the best way to get calcium your body needs.
Of course, calcium is important for health bones and teeth, but there are other things that affect your bone strength, such as genes, how much vitamin D you take in and getting an hour’s worth of exercise every day.
Some nutritionists disagree with the idea that milk isn’t important. Keri Gans, a dietitian, says, “I think it is irresponsible to take this beverage that children enjoy, especially among those who are unable to meet their nutrient needs for the day, and remove it from lunch time.”
The US government is studying the request of the PCRM, but a decision may be a one way to take off. Meanwhile, Marion Nestle, a professor at New York University, put it best: “Milk demonstrably has nutrients. Other foods have the same nutrients. It’s just a food. Like other foods, too much might be a problem. ”
29. Why does the US government ask students to drink one cup of milk at lunch time?
A. They have been told many times.
B. They have taken the PCRM’s advice.
C. Fat-free or low-fat milk is less expensive.
D. Milk helps build students’ strong bones.
30. Which of the following opinions does the PCRM support?
A. Milk is harmful to students’ health.
B. Students should drink more milk each day.
C. Orange juice is higher in calcium than milk.
D. Milk is the best way to get calcium.

Since IQ testing began a century ago, women have been as much as five points behind, leading psychologists to suggest genetic differences between the male and the female.
That gap has been narrowing in recent years and this year women have moved ahead.
The finding has been made by James Flynn, a world-famous expert on IQ tests. “In the last 100 years, the IQ scores of both men and women have risen but women’s have risen faster,” said Flynn. “ This is a result of modernity. The complex modern world is making our brains adapt and raising our IQs.”
One possible explanation is that women’s lives have become more demanding as they multitask between raising a family and doing a job. Another might be that women have a slightly higher potential intelligence than men and are only now realizing it.
Flynn also made the great discovery that scores in western countries increased by roughly three points a decade, which means people today get 30 more points than those living 100 years ago and that IQs can be improved.
Flynn conducted new IQ tests in western European countries, America, Canada, New Zealand, Argentina and Estonia, which showed that the gap between men and women had become very small. In New Zealand, Estonia and Argentina, women scored slightly higher than men.
Maybe because of this, many women have exchanged the role with their husband in family life. Helena Jamieson, 33, works a full-time job and her husband, Luke, 37, is a stay-at-home father. Helena said, “I’m definitely the more intellectual person in the relationship and I’m at work full-time rising up the career ladder while he is raising our daughter.”
She added, “In the past, men would look down on me, thinking that I was a woman and not as smart as them. But today, things have changed. I think women probably always know secretly deep down that they are the more intelligent ones-but as the gentler sex, we were just quiet about it in the past and let men believe that they ruled the world.”
33. In the psychologists’ view, what led to women getting lower scores than men in IQ tests?
A. Family genes. B. Genetic differences.
C. Educational levels. D. Job positions.
34. Helena’s words in the last paragraph show that .
A. women may have been thinking they are smarter
B. men have the right to continue ruling the world
C. things have changed and men have got less clever
D. women were looked down upon, for they were quiet
35. The main idea of the passage is that .
A. wives now serve as breadwinners while husbands raise children
B. people today are much smarter than those living 100 years ago
C. in western countries, women scored higher than men in IQ tests
D. women’s IQ has risen faster and has even gone beyond men’s

How to Teach Kids to Respect Others
When teaching kids to respect others, you must know how to respect others yourself. 36 You must know how to, and consistently use the skill. In this way your teaching will become more effective.
So, the very first and most important tool in teaching kids to respect others is to respect others yourself. Always show respect to people, and always show respect to the kids you’re trying to teach. 37 . There is no need to conduct your life by keeping company with people who are disrespectful to you or your family. There are plenty of people in the world. Sometimes you may become emotional, angry or upset over the words or actions of others. It can be difficult to avoid, but if you want to teach kids to respect others, you must respect others as well.
Children learn by example. Children will automatically do what they are taught, but teaching doesn’t come through words alone. 38 .
Another important factor to keep in mind is to listen carefully to what they say. You’ve had children, so now it’s your job to raise them the best you can. 39 Do not yell. Do not roll your eyes and never hit them. If you engage in any of this type of behavior with your children, they will learn that this behavior is acceptable.
Always make children feel like they are the most important thing in the world to you. 40
Nothing is more important than giving your children undivided(全部的) attention when they need it. So make them feel like they are No. 1 and they will learn so much just to respect others. They will learn compassion, listening skills, and how to choose friends who are good for them.
A. When your children speak, listen carefully.
