Riding a bike is good exercise and great fun. But what do you do with a bike if you don’t use it any more? Nicole Basil, 12, from the USA, has a wonderful answer to this question. In 2008, she created a charity organization that collects bikes and gives them to Chicago public schools for free. So far, she has collected more than 1,000 bikes.
A Bicycle & Sport Shop helps to make sure all the bikes collected are safe to ride. Each bike receives a 5-minute check-up in the shop. Larry is from the shop. He said he was happy to help a charity that does good to the community. After the check-up, the bikes are given as to students who have good grades and do well. 'Some kids aren’t as lucky as others, but they still do well in school, 'Nicole said. 'And I think they deserve a prize for their hard working.'
Barton Dassinger, a headmaster of a school in Chicago, thinks it is a great way to encourage the students to do their best
Now Nicole has received a lot of e-mails and phone calls from parents and teachers. They said the kids‘ test scores and grades were improving because of the bikes. 'Bikes can take you far,' Nicole said.
